Roll Call Those Board members in attendance were Chairman Craig Lords, Vice - chairman Annette Winchester, Treasurer Kip Nelson, Trustee Wendy Horman, and Trustee DeVere Hunt. Doug MoLvmn Mr. Pymm proposed to implement 5.0 grading scale at the two traditional high schools for pre — AP, AP, or College Credit courses, When colleges examine applicants for entrance they look at ACT or SAT and class ranking. This will give students a better chance to earn scholarships. We encourage students to take these classes but they are conflicted by taking these Courses because of possible effect on their GPA. We would like this change to affect this years sophomores, Chairman Lords asked if any Board members had questions, There was o question regarding which colleges look at ACT o, SAT and class ranking. Most of the colleges are looking a| these measures. GPx doesn't have the same weight an class rank. We are talking Idaho Colleges. Many districts in the area use weighted GPA. When colleges look at the GPA they unweight it. The SpA can't change the class rank. The top students will receive top requests. Colleges and scholarship committees look ot class rank. Wo want m compare will) students across the state. Chairman Lords asked if there were other questions from the Board, hearing none he moved on to public comment, VU. He asked those who wished to speak m state their name and address for the record. Julie Abbot 7060 E Rimrock Drive, Her girls are at Hillcrest. She asked why we wouldn't want to du what |tio better for the students, Brent Dixon |s the spouse of an employee. He spoke of a national rnerit scholar that Couldn't get in to merit classes in the university because of class rank. Mary Walquist had questions. If the ACTscore that gets Students into the colleges, why weight the grades if all colleges have a 4,0 grading scale? The answer was thatwe are doing it to affect class rank, This will give students who take advanced classes a reward There is a strong correlation between student scores on ACT and those who take advanced classes, Some students shy away from hard classes because of possible risk to GPA. If they take these courses, they will do better on the ACT and in college courses. The proposal will only affect Lipper level Courses. The question was asked how it will be explained to the kids. The answer was if you have a student taking a regular class getting an A they will have a 4.0 GPA. Those taking an advanced placement or dual credit course will get a 4.3 or higher GPA. The question was asked if more classes would be opened. The answer was that we are hoping that we can offer more classes that are higher level courses. We have had to cancel classes in the past because not enough students registered to take them, We haven't had the need to turn kids away from rigorous courses, Ms. Walquist stated that this needs to be explained to the Students. She asked if kids will shy away from a class because of the 5.0 grading system, The answer was that we need to communicate what the 5.0 means, Mr, Hunt asked about concurrent enrolment, The answer was that we are hoping to offer more classes through the College of Southern Idaho (CSI) to provide concurrent enrollment opportunities. They are a junior college and have more flexibility. We may have more teachers that can teach these classes, All in state colleges and BYU-1 will accept these credits. We are not considering honors classes a Those classes are freshman and sophomore classes and we do not yet have a bonified way demonstrate rigor. He was concerned that parents may push too hard. Mr. Hunt asked if we can we offer more college classes even if we don't offer the weighted grading system, We want h give kids the opportunity to access higher level classes. |f kids work toward getting college credits in high school, they can access for $65,00 per course as opposed to $12580 per course after high school. Erica Johnson is thrilled that we are looking at a weighting grading system. She would like it expanded to honors classes from 91h grade up. The principals explained that problem is that every teacher thinks they deserve a5.V scale. Ne want astandard that io outside our building and outside Our teacher group. Wv want ahuni§odstandard and Curriculum, The AP Curriculum meets the standard and we have a test to go with it, That is why we chose to do what we are proposing. The question was asked, why not include freshman? Tile concern is whether taking a class as a freshman merits the extra GPA, There is not a distinction between an honors Course and regular course, other than when a student takes it, We need something more concrete. If it is labeled honors, why hasn't it been it been weighted? The answer was that maybe we car) do this later. We checked with District 91. They are only weighting AP classes. Can we make the weighted scale retroactive? That may not be fair to students who didn't know the rules and may put others aiadisadvantage, Mrs. Horman thanked those who have asked questions, She had some follow-up questions. What causes uoto label a Course en honors? K depends oo the Course, |twi||ho honors because aStudent takes the course one year ahead of schedule but, it is the same curriculum i.e. geometry. Biology is a little more detailed and they go a little deeper. There is not a lot written down. We need to make the distinctions, Algebra 2 as sophomore is honors. If a student takes u Course and obtains college credit and others take the course and don't receive college credit, Would the Student still be given 50 scale? What i|a sophomore takes that class? A student needs touo1V years old by the end of the course to receive college credit. AP courses don't have an age limitation. We will adjust and label some honors classes as pre-AP to get 5.0 scale as a sophomore. We need Nhnconsistent. We don't want an argument between the faculty members, What about online Courses? How will we grade on|DLA course? The outside organization Would need to audit and have the same rigor. They could qualify for 5.0scale. Students need m earn a3.0mqualify for college credit. Not every credit will transfer as the Course you took in high school, Mr. Hunt asked what the grade would be if You get all F on the 5.0 scale. The answer is that an F is an F; you get a 0. Connie Scott Chairman Lords asked Mr. Pyrnin to introduce the Bonneville High HOSA winner of Outstanding Chapter Award and Gold Medal winner in Job Seeking Skills. Mr. Pyllini introduced Connie Scott and stated that her students have been highly decorated over the years. She stated that these two students have the opportunity to go to Nationals. Hailey Robison was the historian and documented the things they did over the year. You need to earn a certain amount of points to be recognized. She introduced her parents, F. Honor Technical Careers High School Skills USA National Weldinq Qualifier Team — Craig Miller 1. Kade Cook 2. Bryarlee Williams 3. Colton Heaps Chairman Lords asked Mr. Miller to introduce the Technical Careers High School National Welding Qualifier Team members. Mr. Miller introduced the students and asked the students to come forward for recognition. They did the fabrication design and building in five hours, Brad Huntsman is the instructor. The fire place was on display in the Board Room. The Students introduced their parents. K Honor Heath Jackson Assistant Principal of the Year - Doug McLaren Chairman Lords asked Mr. McLaren to introduce the Assistant Principal of the Year award winner. He introduced Heath Jackson who was selected as Idaho Assistant Principal of the Year. Mr. McLaren nominated Mr. Jackson and then he had to fill out the application. He was then interviewed and there was no question who should get this award. Hillcrest is a better school because Mr. Jackson is there. He is a product of Bonneville District. He introduced his mom, dad, wife, and new born baby. 1. Naminq the New School -Tonn Gauchay Chairman Lords asked Mr. Gauchay to recommend a name to the Board for the new school. Mr. Gauchay stated that the Survey was sent out and Crow Creek got 44 votes. Pinnacle got 4 votes and Summit got 60 votes. Mr. Gauchay is partial to Summit Hills. Chairman Lords thanked him for his efforts with the committee and Survey. He stated that here is a Summit Elementary in Jerome. Summit Hills Would be unique. Chairman Lords asked if there Would be a motion to name the new school Summit Hills Motion: Annette Winchester made the motion to name the new school Summit Hills Elementary. DeVere Hunt seconded. Accelerated Reader Classroom Model and Master Certification Recognition - Scott Woolstenhulme Chairman Lords asked Mr. Woolstenhulme to present the Accelerated Reader Classroom Model and Master Certification Recognition Awards to teachers of the District. Mr. Woolstenhulme stated that we have been engaged in the work of Professional Learning Communities, Our mission statement is; Learning Together, Achieving Excellence, We made an investment in Renaissance Learning that includes Accelerated Reading and Math. We have had a rigorous implementation of these programs in the classrooms. Motion passed K Secondary Buildinq Options — Chuck Shackett, Don Trauntvein, April Burton Chairman Lords asked Dr. Shackett, Mr. TraLintvein, and Mrs. Burton to present information regarding Secondary Building options for the District. Dr. Shackett stated that we have added 5000 students and six elementary schools. The elementary Students are coming to our middle and high schools, Chairman Lords stated that when we go to a bond we authorize the people of the School Sistrict to have a voice. We have asked the staff to put numbers and thoughts together. Dr. Shackett stated that the staff has spent a lot of time working on ideas, We came up with a great one the other day. Plan C: Sandcreek becomes Hillcrest High School Annex. We will build a new football field and track as well as a new middle school. Rocky Mountain Middle becomes Bonneville High School Annex. We will build a new middle school on the north end and an additional elementary school. The cost will be approximately $60million. Mrs, Burton talked about bonding capacity and ceiling $92 million is the bonding maximum, We have looked at various bond terms. A 30 year term Would cost $60.00 annually or $5.00 per month for each $100,000 taxable market value. A 20 year term would raise taxes $8.75 per month for each $100,000 taxable market value, Mr. Traumvein stated that there are problems with expanding Rocky Mountain Middle School, There is no room. We Could move 91, graders into the middle school complex, We Would need to add classrooms at the High School, This would give us the freedom to have schools within the school and gives the Technical Careers High School the ability to expand. The big change would be down South. There are problems with parking by combining the middle school and high school. There are nice science classrooms at Sandcreek that gives Hillcrest options, We Could put in a high school stadium where the Sandcreek stadium is currently located and use the area in front for parking. We would want to bury the canal to make a second exit We would need additional locker room space and new lights. Almost every elementary in the south have all classrooms Occupied. Moving the 611, graders back to elernentaries bought us some room at the middle schools.
